How Gold Price Per Gram Works

Gold trades internationally at a price per troy ounce. To get the price per gram, divide the spot price by 31.1035 (the number of grams in a troy ounce). That gives you the per-gram price for pure gold.

At the posted spot price of $5,019.18 per troy ounce, one gram of pure gold is worth $161.37. On this page, 24K uses the industry-standard 999 fine designation (99.9% pure), so the 24K per-gram price is $161.21.

For any other karat, multiply by the purity fraction. 14K gold is 58.33% pure, so its per-gram price is $161.37 × 0.5833 = $94.13. The table above does this math for every karat from 8K through 24K.

14K Gold — 58.33% pure

The dominant karat in American jewelry — most gold rings, wedding bands, and chains sold in the U.S. are 14K. It's durable enough for daily wear while still having solid gold content. Hallmark stamp: 585 or 14K.

18K Gold — 75.00% pure

Noticeably richer in color than 14K, with about 29% more gold per gram. 18K is the European fine jewelry standard and the default for many luxury brands. Softer than 14K, so it scratches more easily. Hallmark stamp: 750 or 18K.

22K Gold — 91.67% pure

Common in South Asian and Middle Eastern jewelry, and used in coins like the American Gold Eagle and South African Krugerrand. The deep gold color is distinctive, but the high gold content makes it soft — 22K jewelry shows wear faster than lower karats. Hallmark stamp: 916 or 22K.

24K Gold — 99.9% pure

Essentially pure gold, used for investment bars, bullion coins (Canadian Maple Leaf, Chinese Panda), and some traditional Asian jewelry. Rarely used in daily-wear pieces because of its softness — nearly all wearable gold jewelry is alloyed to a lower karat. Hallmark stamp: 999 or 24K.

From Price Per Gram to Item Value

The per-gram price tells you what gold is worth per unit of weight. To find the melt value of a specific item, multiply the per-gram price by the item's weight in grams.

Worked Example

A 14K wedding band weighing 5 grams:

$94.13/g × 5g = $470.66

This is the melt value — the worth of the pure gold content at the posted spot price. A buyer's offer will be some percentage below this number.

Why Karat Affects the Price Per Gram

Karat measures the fraction of an alloy that is gold. 24K is essentially pure gold. Everything lower contains other metals — copper, silver, zinc, palladium — mixed in for hardness, durability, and color.

The price per gram scales directly with purity. At the posted spot price, 14K gold ($94.13/g) is worth about 40% more per gram than 10K ($67.24/g), simply because more of each gram is gold. The alloy metals in the remaining weight contribute very little to the price.

This means two items of the same weight but different karats can have very different values. A 10-gram 18K chain is worth $1,210.28, while a 10-gram 10K chain is worth $672.38 — a difference of $537.90 for the same weight on the scale.

What is the difference between gold price per gram and per troy ounce?
They express the same underlying value in different units. One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, so per-gram is simply per-troy-ounce divided by 31.1035. When you see gold quoted "per ounce," it always means per troy ounce — not a regular ounce (28.35g). Using the wrong ounce would overstate the per-gram price by about 10%.
